This lantern is based on an original design by the Swiss physicist and chemist Aimé Argand. Patented in 1780, it was the first fixture to employ a hollow cylindrical wick through and around which air flows, increasing the intensity of the light produced. The invention counted among its fans Thomas Jefferson, who noted that the brightness was 6 to 10 times that of conventional wicks. Hand made in Vermont. Metal parts are hand-plated with a pewter formula. They will oxidize darken and acquire the patina of mottled, old pewter. DO NOT USE METAL POLISH AS IT WILL REMOVE THE PLATING.
