French Empire 19th-C Gilt Bronze Wall Sconce After Claude Galle Electrified Dore
ITEM: French Empire Bronze Dore Candle Sconce – A Versailles Design. CREATOR: Claude Gallé, or closely after. DETAILS: Amazing true antique gilt bronze wall light candle sconce. Design incorporates a lion and the head of Diana in a sun roundel, mounted on a central arrow. Very similar to those Gallé made for the Grand Trianon salon at Versailles. This single sconce is period 19th century, made with incredible artistry, and stamped with several interesting marks. Electrified for four bulbs. PLACE OF ORIGIN: France. MATERIALS AND TECHNIQUES: Gilt-finished bronze, added electrical. MARKS: See marks shown in photos, “C” or superimposed “CG, ” also “1781, “Made in France (English may indicate made for export). CONDITION: Significant wear to gilt finish, signs of age. Sconce has at some point been electrified with candle lamps and plug cord. DIMENSIONS: 24 5/8″ high, 15″ across.
